Assault on the Christian Family's Values and Morals

America's traditional family values and morals are being besieged in unimaginable proportions. Never has the Christian family faced such an onslaught of evil strategies and influences.

Christian families are under assault from every conceivable anti-family force imaginable. These assaults are being unleashed with a merciless fervor. The purpose is to destroy family values and morals.

The assault on families is real, and the danger is more serious than most Christians realize. Unless families awaken to what is happening in America and become energized in the defense of biblical truth, Christian integrity, family honor, and American patriotism, the family will continue to lose its moral influence and political power. When good people remain silent, evil prevails; and when evil prevails, the Christian family and society suffer the consequences.

The chief architect of this assault is Satan. He hates God and anyone who loves Him. His intent is to redefine and to destroy the sanctity of marriage and to negate the influence of Christian values and morals. Scripture warns us, "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour" (l Pet. 5:8).

The assault against the family includes the influences spawned by the entertainment media: music, television, and Hollywood. These influences eat like a cancer at family values and morals. Drug use devastates lives and destroys families. Abortions continue to increase at an alarming rate; the divorce rate is on the rise; babies born to unwed mothers continue to increase; and crime has escalated with an alarming rise in brutal, vicious acts. Safety and trust have become major issues in the American culture. These are only some of the influences that ruin homes, destroy children's lives, and break the hearts of parents.

Dual career parents, single mothers, latchkey children, and detached teenagers also put a strain on family relations. Over-committed, fearful, and confused families have strayed from or forgotten God's plan for the home. Like the children of Israel, the family is concentrating more on its place in the world instead of seeking after God's will: "They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; and forgat his works ..." (Ps. 78: 10-11 a).

In addition to these influences, a majority of America's children are educated in schools where standards of right and wrong are based on personal preferences instead of biblical absolutes. Thus, absolute truths are rejected in secular education as a moral guide for behavior and beliefs. Satan led a revolt in the 1960s against Christianity in the public schools and succeeded in banning prayer and the Bible. Now, humanism rules. Satan continuously stalks the Christian family, convincing many that Christ's preeminence in education is irrelevant in the twenty-first century.

The Christian home, the training ground for teaching Christian values and morals, can counter these assaults. From the beginning of time, God gave parents the responsibility to train their children to love and serve Him and to love and obey their parents. The home is where children learn how to live for God and how to honor Him and their parents.

A final thought to consider: America was founded by men and women who desired religious liberty. From their dream, America grew to become the greatest nation in the world, a nation with a moral conscience deep-rooted in the teaching of Scripture. Unfortunately, the morals and values that once reigned in American families, businesses, and government are vanishing.

Application
The Bible is life's rulebook for Christian families. Parents must teach its precepts to their children; they must practice its principles and obey its laws; they must seek God's wisdom in knowing how to cope with life's problems. This requires building a hedge of biblical truth around the family and depending on the Holy Spirit for guidance. It also means that parents should live principle-driven lives, pray for forgiveness of sin and deliverance from evil, and practice living by faith instead of by sight.

Christian parents should always follow God's ways, even when they do not understand His directions (Prov. 3:5-6). This means asking the hard questions. Is God exalted in my home? Is my child's teacher reinforcing the biblical absolutes that I believe and teach at home? Is my child's teacher a Christian that models Christ and Bible truths? Is my child studying from Christian textbooks that present knowledge in the light of Scripture? The answers are enough for any devoted Christian parent to give Christian education his support. This single choice will help parents divert many of the assaults Satan makes upon the Christian family.

Dr. Charles Walker is the executive director of the American Association of Christian Schools. He also serves as the executive director of the Tennessee Association of Christian Schools.

Prayer for Children at School

Father, in Jesus' name, I confess Your Word this day concerning my children as they pursue their education and training at school. You are effectually at work in them, creating within them the power and desire to please You. They are the head and not the tail, above and not beneath.

I pray that my children will find favor, good understanding, and high esteem in the sight of God and their teachers and classmates. I ask You to give my children wisdom and understanding as knowledge is presented to them in all fields of study and endeavor.

Father, thank You for giving my children an appreciation for education and helping them to understand that the Source and beginning of all knowledge is You. They have the appetite of the diligent, and they are abundantly supplied with educational resources; their thoughts are those of the steadily diligent, which tend only to achievement. Thank You that they are growing in wisdom and knowledge. I will not cease to pray for them, asking that they be filled with the knowledge of Your will, bearing fruit in every good work.

Father, I thank You that my children have divine protection since they dwell in the secret place of the Most High. My children trust and find their refuge in You and stand rooted and grounded in Your love. They shall not be led astray by philosophies of men and teaching that is contrary to truth. You are their Shield and Buckler, protecting them from attacks or threats. Thank You for the angels whom You have assigned to them to accompany, defend, and preserve them in all their ways of obedience and service. My children are established in Your love, which drives all fear out of doors.

I pray that the teachers of my children will be godly men and women of integrity. Give our teachers understanding hearts and wisdom in order that they may walk in the ways of piety and virtue, revering Your holy name. Amen.

Prayer for Christian School Teachers and Administrators

Father, we come in the name of Jesus. We thank You for teachers and administrators who are filled, with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and ability, in understanding and intelligence, in knowledge and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to devise skillful methods for teaching us and our children the Word of God. They are teachers who give themselves to teaching.

Father, may these teachers recognize that they must assume the greater accountability. According to Your Word, teachers will be judged by a higher standard and with greater severity [than other people]. We thank You that our teachers will not offend in speech - never say the wrong things - that they may be fully developed characters and perfect men and women, each one able to control his her own body and to curb his/her entire nature.

Thank You that our teachers are part of the fivefold ministry who are perfecting and fully equipping the saints (God's consecrated people), [that they should do] the work of ministering toward building up Christ's Body (the Church), [that it might develop] until we all attain oneness in the faith and in the comprehension of the full and accurate knowledge of the Son of God; that [we might arrive] at really mature manhood – the completeness of personality, which is nothing less than the standard height of Christ's own perfection – the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Christ and the completeness found in Him.

Thank You, Father, that Your people at our school are no longer children tossed [like ships] to and fro. They are enfolded in love, growing up in every way and in all things into Him, Who is the Head, [even] Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One.

Father, You are effectually at work in our teachers - energizing and creating in them the power and desire - both to will and to work for Your good pleasure and satisfaction and delight. Father, in the name of Jesus, their power and ability and sufficiency are from You. [It is You] Who have qualified them (making them to be fit, worthy, and sufficient) as ministers and dispensers of a new covenant. They are not ministers of the law which kills, but of the (Holy) Spirit, which makes alive.

Father, we rejoice in the Lord over our teachers and commit to undergird them with our faith and love. We will not judge or criticize them, but speak excellent and princely things concerning them. The opening of our lips shall be for right things.

Thank You, Father, that the teachers live in harmony with the other members of our school, being in full accord and of one harmonious mind and intention. Each is not [merely] concerned for his/her own interests, but each for the interest of others. Jesus is our example in humility, and our teachers shall tend - nurture, guard, guide, and fold - the flock of God, which is [their responsibility], and they will be examples of Christian living to the flock (the students).

Thank You, Father, for the performance of Your Word in our midst, in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Are America’s Schools Safe?

A safe learning environment is important to parents and students. It is a valid reason for placing children in a Christian school and keeping them there.

LITTLETON, COLORADO was a little known community until two Columbine High School seniors went on a killing spree that left fifteen people dead. Americans watched this terrifying event unfold on television in what became the third most closely watched news story of the 1990s. This horrible atrocity was a reminder of the unprecedented number of mass shootings, six in all, that have occurred in public schools since October 1997.1

An outgrowth of these shootings produced an unusual merger of liberal and conservative planks: toughness on guns, violent culture, and criminals.2 National politicians quickly seized the opportunity to tighten gun control laws while many state legislatures either adopted or considered adopting school safety packages aimed at curbing school violence.

The increase of violence in public schools has alerted many parents to the seriousness of violence in public schools, a problem that seems to get worse instead of better. Parents want their children to attend a safe school where the emphasis is on character development and classroom learning.

A number of reasons are given to explain the rise in public school violence: easy availability of drugs, increase in single-parent homes, violence portrayed on television, frequent child abuse, and messages promoted in rock music. Strangely missing from this list is the absence of Christian moral standards and values that produce order and respect. A speaker at a Littleton memorial service was applauded when he stated ''It is time for this nation to recognize that when we empty the public schools of the moral teachings and the standards of our holy God, they are indeed very dangerous places."3

The long-term answer to the problem of violence in America's classrooms is not the passing of stronger crime laws, or building more reform schools and prisons, or installing metal detectors in public schools, even though some of these measures are definitely needed. The problem of violence goes much deeper. It is a problem that reaches into the very nature of man, his sinful nature, and the need to recognize a total dependence on Jesus Christ instead of man. The removal of the Biblical standards and moral teachings that once prevailed in public schools stripped our nation of the only restraint and understanding needed to curtail violence in schools and in society.

Until the sin problem is addressed, violence in the public schools will continue to increase. Students will continue to do what they think is right in their own eyes. They will set their own standards and make their own rules. This do-it-my-way attitude was reflected in a survey recently conducted by two Tulane researchers. Twenty percent of the high school students surveyed believed it was all right to shoot someone if he stole something from you. Eighty percent believed it was all right to shoot a person who had offended or insulted you.4 When standards of right and wrong become this obscure, selfwill prevails, and where self-will prevails, security guards and metal detectors become commonplace in our schools.

Times have certainly changed. The guiding principles of Biblical truth no longer serve our nation's public schools. First Amendment rights have suffered distortion and dilution at the hands of the courts. A religious cleansing of the public schools has expunged the Bible, the Ten Commandments, and prayer from public school classrooms. This, plus a cultural and morality shift in America, sets the stage for the loss of what was once a safe environment in public schools. God's standards are out; permissiveness is in; and violence is on the increase.

Violence is not a problem in Christian schools because Biblical standards for discipline and morality are the norm, not the exception. School officials enforce behavioral and academic policies that parents appreciate. A student's spiritual growth and personal behavior are as important as his academic development. It is the balance between these pivotal areas that keeps the Christian school violence free. A safe learning environment is important to parents. It is a valid motivation for placing children in a Christian school. But, it must be remembered that Christian education exists for a higher purpose. This purpose, to direct students toward a practical, active relationship with Christ, makes it possible to ensure the kind of environment and the kind of future that parents desire for their children.
